Denver served them both Essay From a literal viewpoint, the novels Beloved by Toni Morrison and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad have no correlation on the grounds that they feature entirely different settings, timeframes, character types, and style. However, when the overall themes and messages of both books are examined, the reader is able to see that both stories make strong statements about societies plagued by racism. In Morrisons novel, Beloved, Denvers character undergoes significant personality changes that vary with the progression of the plot and especially with Beloveds presence in 124; these changes mirror the emotional and psychological journey of the character Marlow from Heart of Darkness. Both of these evolving characterizations reflect the authors intents to display the effect of racism and societal corruption on individuals. Throughout Beloved, the relationships between the key characters are in a constant state of motion and fluidity, depending on the presence of the most influential character, Beloved. In particular, the relationships involving the character Beloved are often especially dynamic, and Beloveds presence in the lives of several characters frequently leaves them with significant emotional changes. Specifically, the cycle of Denvers maturity throughout the plot relates strongly to the power that Beloved had over her at any particular time. Early in the novel, Denver tends to be characterized as a rude, selfish girl. When Paul D comes to 124 and causes with the babys spirit to temporarily leave the house, Denver responds to him with sarcasm and immaturity, giving the house a tense atmosphere: Now her mother was upstairs with the man who had gotten rid of the only company she had. Denver dipped a bit of bread into the jelly. Slowly, methodically, miserably she ate it, (20). Throughout her teenage years, Denver had become so dependent upon the camaraderie that the ghost had provided, and when the spirit left, she felt lost and alone. This misery lasts until the moment Beloved, the babys materialized spirit, arrived at 124. The majority of the relationship between Beloved and Denver throughout the remainder of the book features mainly Denvers adoration and fascination with Beloved. Once again, Denver is captivated by Beloved, and would gladly do anything for her. Denvers devotion continues to the point of Denver acting as the caretaker for the demanding Beloved and the weakening Sethe: Denver served them both. Washing, cooking, forcing, cajoling her mother to eat a little now and then, providing sweet things for Beloved as often as she could to calm her down. It was hard to know what she would do from minute to minute. When the heat got hot, she might walk around the house naked or wrapped in a sheet, her belly protruding like a winning watermelon. Denver thought she understood the connection between her mother and Beloved: Sethe was trying to make up for the handsaw; Beloved was making her pay for it, (263). As Beloved established herself as a part of Denver and Sethes lives, Denver grew stronger, more confident, and more mature. She eventually realized the detriment that Beloved was causing (especially to Sethe), and regained her grip on reality without Beloved controlling it. By the end of the novel, Denvers personality has completely transformed: It was true. Paul D saw her the next morning when he was on his way to work and she was leaving hers. Thinner, steady in the eyes, she looked more like Halle than ever. She was the first to smile. Good morning, Mr. D. Well, it is now. Her smile, no longer the sneer he remembered, had welcome in it and strong traces of Sethes mouth, (280). Morrison designed Beloveds character as a general representation of several common evils of society, including inordinate selfishness and the desire for revenge. Denvers character is easily manipulated by Beloveds strength, though eventually she is able to break free of Beloveds power. In Conrads Heart of Darkness, the main character, Marlow, undergoes a drastic emotional and mental transformation, specifically due to his continual exposure to a secretive corruption of humanity.

The Blind side The Blind Side directed by John Lee Hancock was a visual text about a teenage boy named Michael. Based on a true story Michael, nicknamed Big Mike has grown up in a poor and broken family and goes to a public school where no one really cares about him. Growing up this way has left Big Mike emotionally deprived and lonely. Thanks to his Friend’s dad Michael gets the opportunity to go to a private school on a scholarship. Suddenly he has teachers that care about him and while his life seems to be slowly improving, Big Mike still uses other people’s washing machines in the Laundromat, does not sleep at home and stays at the gym at school because it was warm. The biggest turning point in this movie was when Leigh Anne Touhy sees Big Mike on the side of the road and lets Big Mike have a place to stay. Leigh is a woman that gets what she wants and it is clear from the moment she meets Mike that she would care for him. From this point Big Mike and Leigh build a strong relation ship, he ends up moving in with them and becomes a part of the family. Michael is a big man and one of the reasons he was accepted into the school was because he had the perfect build to play American football and by the end of the movie Big Mike was one of the top players and went on to have a career in it. My favorite character throughout the book was definitely Big Mike, I love how complex of a character the director made him. Appearance wise, Big Mike looked big and tough, he was the type of boy that you would walk the opposite direction when you see him on the street, but when you see him in the movie you discover how kind hearted he is. A classic example of this is when Big Mike is first playing football and he doesn’t tackle anyone because he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. He reminds me of a giant teddy bear that wouldn’t hurt anyone. But then as well as his kind heart if you dig deeper you can see the inner strength he possesses. From a very young age Michael is forced to look after himself and to get through it the way he did could only be done with utter strength. When most people are left with no one they give up but I admire Big Mike so much for turning to himself and doing all he could to make his life work. Not only is this but his loyalty unbreakable. To get Big Mike to tackle at the practice Leigh said to him to pretend that these guys were going to hurt her and his family and that’s when he finally tackled with aggression. You could see then and there that Big Mike would take on anyone that tried to hurt his family and those he cared about. To me it Big Mike is, for lack of a better expression, a total cutie. My favorite part of the movie is when Leigh asks Big Mike if he would like to be part of their family and Big Mike looks at her dead seriously and replies ‘I thought I already was.’ Throughout the whole movie it was this character that constantly impressed and engaged me and the fact that it was based on a true story just adds to this. One of the main ideas in the visual text The Blind Side is courage. Leigh Touhy shows courage when she takes Mike Oher from off the streets and gives him a roof over his head and someone to lean on. This showed courage in the best of ways and it couldn’t off been done to anyone else. Although Leigh’s family did not agree with having Mike there in the first place, then soon got to like the guy and really enjoyed having him there as another brother or son. It also took real courage for Leigh and Michael to legally adopt Big Mike as a child, get his driver license and help him get into the best school available for Mike to go to on a football scholarship. Leigh also had courage for going to her own friends and telling them about Mike. A conversation held with her friends is. Friend: â€Å"You’re changing that boy’s life† Leigh: â€Å"No He’s changing mine†. I thought that Leigh had courage to say this to her friends as Mike is not her own son yet she is taking care of him as he is the only child in the family. A quote from the film The Blind Side to represent Courage is â€Å"that’s why courage is tricky. Should you always do what others tell you to do? Sometimes you might not even know why you’re doing something. I mean, any fool can have courage†. This is saying that courage is important but it’s hard. You should do what you want to do and not what others tell you to do,  but the main point is that anyone can have courage; weather their big, small, tall or short. The text that I immediately thought of was The Dead Poets society and in particular Neil. The reason for this is in my mind I started to immediately compare the difference between Neil and Michael. As I previously stated Big Mike had to deal with the loneliness in his life and the way he did this was by turning to himself for support. I think the reason that Neil committed suicide was loneliness, by this I don’t mean that he had no friends, as it was obvious from the start he did, but that he felt like he had no support from those that mattered. If his dad had shown a slight interest in his acting career then Neil would have been satisfied but because his dad seemed not to care Neil felt like he had no one to turn to and no options. This is the difference that I see between Neil and Michael, inner strength. While Michael appeared soft throughout the visual text, to carry on living especially in certain points in his life took incredible inner strength and as much as I liked Ne il’s character I don’t think he possessed the same strength. Neil is kind of the polar opposite, on the outside he appeared to be strong and content with life but on the inside the way his father was acting slowly killed him inside. Both of these characters had parents that weren’t at all good at their job but it was the difference between the two personalities that ended with one dead and the other a professional football player.

Throughout the years there have been many theories on where man came from and how they developed. There are many people that believe that God created everything. As the scientific studies advanced throughout the ages many theorists developed the idea of evolution. Evolutionists argued that all life on earth gradually evolved over time from single organisms. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was a legendary French Biologist who studied the theory of evolution. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck created his own theory of evolution known as Lamarckism. Lamarckism defined evolution as taking place by inheritance of acquired characteristics. The Lamarckian Theory argued that during a persons life, people acquired new abilities, and then transmitted these skills on to their children. Jean-Baptiste Lamarcks theories may have later come under attack when Darwinism appeared but his contributions proved an important stepping stone for the study of evolution. Jean- Baptiste Lamarck was born Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck on August 1, 1744. He was born in Bazentin, Picardy, France to a poor aristocratic family and he was the youngest of eleven children. His family had strong allegiance to the military and in 1761 he Joined the French Army in Germany during the Seven Years War. After his military career came to an end he developed an interest in natural history and decided to study medicine. Lamarckism was basically a theory divided into four parts. The first part of the theory was the internal urges of organisms. The internal urges of organisms claimed that simple living organisms were succeeded by more complex organisms. He believed the environment an organism lived in controll ed the response the organism had. This portion of the theory argued that the size of a particular organ used was directly in correlation to the amount of use it got. He claimed that organisms grew in size because of an internal urge in response the nvironment and based on the amount of usage they receive. The second portion of the theory claimed that the environment was always in a constant state of change. This ever-changing environment created an altered living space for living things behaviorally and physically noticeable in the organism. Organisms adapted in order to meet the needs of the new habitat they were currently living in. The third piece of Lamarcks theory was that an organs growth depended solely on how much use or disuse they received. He believed that organs that were in regular use tended to row and become strong and efficient. Whereas organs that were infrequently used tended to flounder and possibly even fade away altogether. He gave the example that giraffes that grazed high trees often would have longer and stronger necks that would eventually be passed down to the next generation of giraffes. Cuvier was a colleague of Lamarck at the Natural History Museum and even delivered his eulogy. This however did not stop him from attacking Lamarck and his theory. Cuvier argued that Lamarckism was based all on imagination and speculation and not on any scientific process. Charles Lyell was another strong opponent of Lamarck. He agreed with Cuvier. Lyell also said that he did not think Lamarck had significant fossil proof to support his theory. Later Charles Lyell was converted to an evolutionary position and found himself supporting certain aspects of Lamarckism. This support came too late and Lyells criticism had already proven too damaging to repair the assault Lamarckism had undergone. Charles Darwin gave the world his theory of evolution in 1859. His theory was different than Lamarck in that he argued that the desires of animals have nothing to do with how they evolve, and that changes in an organism during its life do not affect the evolution of the species. He said that organisms, even of the same species, are all different and that those which happen to have variations that help them to survive in their nvironments survive and have more offspring. The offspring are born with their parents helpful traits, and as they reproduce, individuals with that trait make up more of the population. Other individuals, that are not so well adapted, die off. Thus, creating the concept Darwin is most remembered for of survival of the fittest. The only thing Lamarck and Darwin agreed upon was that life was always changing and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck is only remembered for his discredited theory of Lamarckism. His theory should be praised however, for leading the cause of evolution. Lamarck led his life trying to advance the study of science and evolutionary theories. He may not have hit the nail on the head where evolution was concerned but he provided some revolutionary suggestions that made science take notice to the subject and later allowed Charles Darwin to blaze a new trail for evolutionists. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck died poor and disgraced. Unfortunately people do not realize the contributions he made.
